Steamburg
A downloadable game
This game was made to show off some of the skills that I have gained throughout my first year of game development inside of unreal. It showcases the different coding that I am able to do and how I can use that code to create things like this.
In this game you can farm trees and plastic from the coast and sell it to the NPC. The money you earn can then be spent on building blocks inside of the building menu.

Evaluation on the project
Here is some information about this project that I believe went well, could of been better or should of been changed completely.
What went well
Firstly, I like how the building mechanics work. Its quite easy once you get the hang of it to build using it and its quite simple to understand.
What could have gone better
At some points, the building mechanics are sloppy and hard to use, and sometimes blocks are placed in areas that they shouldn't be and cannot be deleted. However they still work great for the first time I have made a building game.
What should I do differently next time
I should find different methods of creating a building mechanic like mine and explore how other major games create them (e.g. Minecraft).
Overall conclusion
I think getting more research and a better understanding of how it works is crucial about making a game, however I did not do this and caused this project to be lacking in a lot of different areas. I also seem to be setting the barrier too high for me to reach in the time I have given, especially with how active I am when actually making my game. I want to try and focus mainly in coding after this project is done as its the main department of game design I want to be in compared to visual art. For my next year, I want to start learning C++ and introducing it into my game. Even if it is a slight bit and does not work well, I just want to try it out for myself and eventually change over to it from blueprint.

Here is a gameplay video of my game, showing off the different features that I have included in my game. You can see via the bottom left the different visual help features that I have added to my game to help the player know what to do. There is a bit of lag and other imperfections to framerate when traveling the map due to the trees, but does not impact the overall gameplay of the game. Once the player gets into the build menu, due to features and other ideas that I have added to the game the framerate increases drastically and does not provide stutters like it used to.
Overall, I think this game turned out slightly worse than expected. However, this game was mainly used to showcase my main focus which is coding. Visual features aren't something I want to be focusing on. For the game jam later this year, the visual assets will not be made by me which will allow me to focus more time on the coding part of the game rather than the visuals.
